How Often Do High Yield Savings Rates Change?
High yield savings rates are variable and can change at any time, often within weeks of a Federal Reserve decision. Here is what moves them, what we saw in our own rate checks after the Fed's September 2026 hike, and how to protect your rate.

High yield savings rates are variable, so a bank can change them at any time, often without notice. Many banks go months without a change, then adjust within weeks of a Federal Reserve decision. After the Fed raised its target range on September 16, 2026, we saw 5 of the 28 accounts we track change rates or add a promotion between October 1 and 7. CD rates are locked once you open one.
Savings rates feel stable until they are not. Here is what actually moves them, what we have seen in our own weekly checks, and how to make sure you are not stuck with a rate that quietly fell.
Why do savings rates change?
- The Federal Reserve. The Fed sets a target range for the federal funds rate, which affects what banks earn and pay on deposits. On September 16, 2026 it raised the range by 0.25 percentage point to 3.75% to 4.00%.
- Competition for deposits. Online banks raise rates when they want more deposits and lower them when they have enough.
- Promotions. Banks add temporary boosts to win new customers, then the rate falls back to the standard rate.
- Bank strategy. A bank might cut one CD term while raising others, depending on how long it wants to hold deposits.

Dates are the as of or start dates each bank gives, from our checks between Oct 1 and Oct 10, 2026. Changes found in our weekly BankingPicks rate checks.
Two patterns stand out. First, most changes came about two to three weeks after the Fed’s September 16 decision. Second, most accounts did not move at all: our full recheck on October 5 found no changes across all 28 accounts that week, and one bank’s savings rate disclosure we track is dated January 8, 2026.
How often do banks change savings rates?
There is no set schedule. Banks can change variable rates as often as daily; Axos, for example, says its rates “may change as often as daily.” In our checks, most accounts went weeks without any change, and CD rates for new deposits changed more often than savings rates.
Will my rate change after I open an account?
For savings and money market accounts, yes, it can. The advertised rate is not locked. Some banks say their advertised APY is for new accounts, so existing customers may earn a different rate. For CDs, your rate is fixed for the term once you open and fund it.
What about promotional rates?
Promotions have a set length. Axos’ October 2026 boost lasts six statement cycles, and SoFi’s APY boost lasts up to six months. When a promo ends, you drop to the standard rate. Our rankings use standard rates for this reason. See how the Axos promo works.
When is the next Fed decision?
The Fed’s next scheduled meetings in 2026 are October 27 to 28 and December 8 to 9. Banks do not have to follow the Fed, but a change at either meeting often shows up in savings and CD rates in the weeks after.
How to protect your rate
- Check your rate every month or two. Compare it with the top rates on our best high yield savings accounts page.
- Keep switching easy. Pick an account with no fees and no minimum so moving costs nothing.
- Lock part of your savings in a CD if you think rates will fall. See our best CD rates.
- Watch promo end dates so you know when your rate will drop.
- Do not chase small gaps. On $10,000, a 0.10% higher APY is about $10 a year.
Rates are variable and can change at any time. Each rate shows the date the bank says it applies; we check every figure against the bank’s own website.

Frequently asked questions
How often do high yield savings rates change?
There is no set schedule. Rates are variable, and banks can change them at any time. Changes are more common in the weeks after a Federal Reserve decision.
Can my savings rate go down after I open the account?
Yes. Savings rates are variable. Only CD rates are fixed for the term.
Do savings rates follow the Fed?
Loosely. After the Fed raised its target range on September 16, 2026, several banks we track raised savings or CD rates within about three weeks, while most did not change.
Do banks tell you when they change your savings rate?
Usually not in advance. Many banks say rates can change without notice, so check your rate regularly.
Should I get a CD to lock in a rate?
A CD locks your rate for the term, which helps if rates fall. Keep money you may need soon in savings.
