Savings basics

How a high yield savings account works

You deposit money, the bank pays interest, and you can withdraw when you need to. The APY tells you how much you would earn over a year, including compounding. Online banks usually pay far more than branch banks because they spend less on buildings and staff.

APY vs. interest rate

The interest rate is the base rate the bank pays. The APY includes the effect of compounding, so it is the better number for comparing accounts. We always show APY, as the bank discloses it.

What it takes to earn the top rate

Some accounts pay their best rate only if you set up direct deposit or keep a minimum balance, and pay less in months you miss those rules. Our reviews list both rates and the exact rules, and our scores reward accounts whose top rate is easy to earn.

Where to keep your emergency fund

Speed matters for emergency cash. Accounts that hold transfers for several business days are better for longer term savings. If you want same day access, keep a small buffer in checking or choose an account with ATM access.
