What $10,000 earns at each rate we track

Based on a $10,000 deposit with no further deposits or withdrawals, interest left in the account, and the APY staying the same. Real rates are variable and change over time. Bank rates checked Oct 27, 2026.

Two accounts appear twice because their rate depends on meeting monthly requirements. Learn why in advertised APY vs. the rate you’ll actually earn.

Estimate assumes the APY stays the same, interest stays in the account and monthly additions go in at the end of each month. National average is the FDIC savings rate of 0.38% as of Oct 19, 2026.

How the math works

APY already includes compounding, so the one year estimate is simple: deposit times APY. $10,000 times 4.00% equals $400. Over several years, interest also earns interest, so five years at 4.00% grows $10,000 to about $12,167, or about $2,167 of interest, if the rate never changed.

In real life, savings rates move. Treat any multi year number as a rough guide, not a promise.

Does a higher balance earn a higher rate?

Usually not. Most high yield savings accounts pay the same rate on every dollar, and some pay less on very large balances. Among the accounts we compare, Axos ONE drops to 3.50% APY on balances of $250,000 and up, and Peak Bank drops to 3.40% APY at $500,000 and up.

What about taxes?

Savings interest is generally taxable income. If a bank pays you at least $10 of interest in a year, it files Form 1099-INT and sends you a copy. How much you keep after tax depends on your tax bracket. A tax professional can tell you what applies to you.

How to earn more on $10,000

  • Move it from a low rate account. The biggest gain comes from leaving an account paying close to the national average.
  • Compare the no strings rate. A high advertised rate helps only if you meet its rules every month.
  • Check your rate every few months. Rates change, and so does the ranking. We check ours weekly on our best high yield savings accounts page.
