Can You Add Money to a CD After You Open It?
Most CDs take a single deposit at opening, and you cannot add money until the CD matures. Here is how funding windows, grace periods and add on CDs work, and what to do instead.

Usually not. Most CDs take one deposit when you open them, and you cannot add more until the CD matures. Some banks give you a short funding window after opening, such as 14 days at Barclays or 60 days at American Express, and you can add money during the grace period at maturity. A few banks and credit unions offer add on CDs that accept extra deposits.
A CD trades flexibility for a fixed rate. The bank knows exactly how much it is holding and for how long, which is why most CDs do not take extra deposits once they are funded.

What is an add on CD?
An add on CD lets you make extra deposits during the term, usually at the CD’s original rate. They are less common than regular CDs, and banks often limit how many deposits you can make or how much you can add. If you want to save a set amount every month at a fixed rate, ask your bank or credit union whether it offers one.
What to do instead
- Open another CD. Many CDs have low or no minimums; Barclays has no minimum deposit. A new CD gets today’s rate for its own term.
- Build a CD ladder. Split money across terms so part matures regularly and can be topped up. See what is a CD ladder?
- Save in a high yield savings account, then move a lump sum into a CD later. Top savings accounts pay 4.40% APY with no rules at our latest check.
- Consider a no penalty CD if you want a fixed rate with an exit. See what is a no penalty CD?
Can you take money out of a CD early?
Yes, but most banks charge an early withdrawal penalty, often a set number of days of interest. Barclays charges 90 days of simple interest on terms of 24 months or less, and 180 days on longer terms. See CD early withdrawal penalties.
What happens at maturity?
You get a grace period to withdraw, add money or change terms. If you do nothing, most CDs renew for the same term at the bank’s current rate, which may be lower than what you could get elsewhere. Set a reminder a week before. See what is a CD? and today’s best CD rates.
