Five banks we track let you open a CD with no minimum deposit: E*TRADE (Morgan Stanley Private Bank), Barclays, Synchrony, American Express and Capital One 360. E*TRADE pays the most on most terms, 4.80% APY on its 2, 3 and 5 year CDs and 4.55% on 12 months. Synchrony leads 9 months (4.50%) and 4 years (4.65%), and Capital One pays 4.50% on its 11 and 14 month CDs. Rates checked at each bank between Oct 20 and Oct 27, 2026.
A CD with no minimum lets you lock in a rate with whatever you have, whether that is $100 or $100,000. You still need to put money in to earn interest, and you cannot take it out early without a penalty. Here is the best no minimum CD for each term, what an early withdrawal costs at each bank, and when a CD that needs a deposit to open pays enough more to matter.

Early withdrawal penalties compared
| Bank | Penalty | Partial withdrawals |
|---|---|---|
| E*TRADE | A set number of days of simple interest based on the term; can reduce principal | Not allowed |
| Barclays | 90 days of interest on terms of 24 months or less; 180 days on longer terms | Penalty applies to the amount withdrawn |
| Synchrony | 90, 180 or 365 days of interest depending on the term | See Synchrony’s terms |
| American Express | 90 days (under 12 months), 270 days (12 to 47 months), 365 days (48 to 59 months), 540 days (60 months) | Not allowed |
| Capital One 360 | 3 months of interest (12 months or less); 6 months (longer terms) | Not allowed |
On a 5 year CD, penalties differ a lot. Barclays and Capital One charge about half a year of interest, while American Express charges 540 days, about a year and a half. If there is any chance you will need the money early, that matters as much as the rate.
When a CD with a minimum is worth it
A no minimum CD pays close to the top rate on most terms, but some CDs that need money to open pay a little more. CFG Bank needs $500 and pays 4.65% APY on 1 year and 4.82% on 2, 3 and 5 years (as of Oct 27, 2026). Bread Savings pays 4.85% APY on 18 months with a $1,500 minimum, about $46 more than E*TRADE’s 4.55% on $10,000 over the term, and Popular Direct’s 6 month CD pays a little more than E*TRADE’s but needs $10,000. Compare every term on our best CD rates page.
No minimum CD or high yield savings?
A high yield savings account also needs little or nothing to open and lets you withdraw any time. The best savings rate we track with no monthly rules is Pibank Savings at 4.40% APY, but that rate can change any day. A CD locks its rate for the term. If you will not need the money and want a guaranteed rate, a CD wins; if you might need it, savings is safer. Compare the best high yield savings accounts.
Are these CDs safe?
Yes. Each bank is FDIC insured: E*TRADE CDs are deposits at Morgan Stanley Private Bank (FDIC certificate 34221), Barclays at Barclays Bank Delaware (57203), Synchrony at Synchrony Bank (27314), American Express at American Express National Bank (27471) and Capital One at Capital One, N.A. (4297). Coverage is up to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category, combined with any other deposits you hold at the same bank.
