What the October 2026 changes show

As of Oct 20, 2026, most of the changes we logged this month were increases, and most were on CDs.

  • CD rates moved up across longer terms. Barclays raised six of its seven CD terms on Oct 7, including 18 months from 3.00% to 4.50% APY. E*TRADE raised its 2, 3 and 5 year CDs to 4.80% on Oct 20.
  • Bread Savings raised CD rates three times in two weeks (Oct 2, Oct 13 and Oct 15). Its 18 month CD went from 4.40% to 4.85% APY over that stretch.
  • Cuts were rare and short term. Barclays cut its 9 month CD and E*TRADE cut its 12 month CD, even as both raised longer terms.
  • Savings changes were smaller. Peak Bank raised Envision savings to 4.27% and American Express raised its high yield savings to 3.20%. Axos added a 6 month promo rate for new accounts opened in October.

How we track rate changes

  • Source: every rate comes from the bank’s own website, never from memory or a third party list.
  • When we check: savings accounts every Monday, CDs every Wednesday, and any bank whenever we update a review or ranking.
  • Date shown: the “as of” or “effective” date the bank publishes for the new rate. If a bank shows no date, we use the date we checked.
  • What counts: a change to a published standard rate or a new published promotion.
  • Limits: we log only the banks we review, and a bank can change a rate and change it back between our checks, so this is not a complete record of every change in the market.

Frequently asked questions

Are savings rates going up or down right now?

At the banks we track, mostly up in October 2026. Through Oct 20 most changes we logged were increases, led by CDs at Barclays, Bread Savings, E*TRADE and Happen Bank. The table on this page shows every change with its date.

How often do banks change savings and CD rates?

There is no set schedule. Some banks went weeks without a change, while Bread Savings changed its CD rates three times between Oct 2 and Oct 15, 2026.

Does a rate change affect my existing CD?

No. A CD keeps the rate it had when you opened it until it matures. Rate changes apply to new CDs and to savings accounts, whose rates are variable.

Will my savings account rate change after I open it?

It can. High yield savings rates are variable, so the bank can raise or lower them at any time. Promo rates, such as a 6 month intro rate, end on the date the bank sets.
