How we chose the best high yield savings accounts
Every account is scored out of 5 on the same weighted scorecard. The rate an account pays carries the most weight, and we also score how easy it is to earn that top rate, so accounts with strict monthly rules do not get a free pass.
| Factor | Weight | What we look at |
|---|---|---|
| Top APY | 30% | The best advertised rate, including rates that need monthly deposits |
| Ease of earning the top APY | 20% | How simple it is to get the top rate: no rules scores highest, direct deposit or balance rules score lower |
| Fees | 15% | Monthly and account fees, and whether they can be avoided |
| Access to money | 15% | Transfer speed, holds, ATM and debit card access |
| App and support | 10% | App Store and Google Play ratings, plus 24/7 support |
| Minimums | 5% | Opening deposit and any ongoing balance needed |
| Safety | 5% | FDIC insurance and any extra coverage through deposit networks |
Rate scores are measured against a 4.25% APY benchmark, so an account paying 4.25% or more earns a full 5 on that factor. Commissions never affect scores or order. Read the full methodology.
How to choose a high yield savings account
1. Start with the rate you will actually get
Headline rates often come with conditions. If an account needs direct deposit or a monthly balance you will not keep, check the rate it pays when you miss those rules. Each of our reviews lists both.
2. Check how fast you can reach your money
Online savings accounts move money by transfer, and some hold new deposits or withdrawals for several business days. If this is your emergency fund, keep a small buffer in checking or choose an account with ATM access.
3. Look past the opening deposit
A $0 or $100 opening deposit is friendlier than $500, but what matters more is whether there is an ongoing minimum balance or a monthly fee. None of the accounts on our list charge a monthly fee.
4. Confirm the insurance
Make sure the bank is FDIC insured and that your total deposits at that bank, including any sister brands, stay within $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category. Some banks offer extra coverage by spreading deposits across partner banks.
High yield savings vs. a regular savings account
A high yield savings account works like any savings account: your money is liquid and insured. The difference is the rate. Online banks have lower costs than branch networks and pass some of the savings on as a higher APY. On a $10,000 balance, the gap between a traditional savings rate and a high yield rate can be hundreds of dollars a year.
Remember: savings rates are variable. The rates on this page were checked on Oct 27, 2026 and can change at any time. Always confirm the current rate and terms on the bank’s website before you open an account. See which banks raised or cut rates recently on our rate change tracker.
Frequently asked questions
Which bank has the highest savings rate right now?
Among the accounts we compare, the highest top rate right now is 4.40% APY at Pibank. Some top rates need direct deposit or balance rules, so check what it takes to earn the rate before you apply. See the table above for current rates and the dates we checked them.
What is a good APY for a high yield savings account?
A good APY is one well above the national average savings rate that you can earn without rules you will not meet. We use a 4.25% APY benchmark for full marks on rate in our scoring, and we also score how easy it is to earn each account’s top rate.
Can you lose money in a high yield savings account?
Not at an FDIC insured bank if your deposits stay within the coverage limits. Your balance does not go down with the market. The main risk is that the variable rate falls over time.
Is the interest on a high yield savings account taxable?
Yes. Interest is generally taxable as ordinary income in the year you earn it, and banks typically send a Form 1099-INT when you earn $10 or more. Bonuses may also be reported as income. Check with a tax professional for your situation.
How many savings accounts should I have?
There is no rule. Many people keep one account for emergencies and separate accounts or buckets for goals. Keep total deposits at any one bank within FDIC coverage limits.
How often does BankingPicks update these rates?
We recheck every rate on this page at least weekly against the bank’s own website, and we update sooner when a bank tells us about a change. Each rate shows the date the bank says it applies and the date we last checked it.
