Some savings accounts only pay their advertised APY if you meet monthly rules, such as direct deposit or a minimum balance. Miss them and you earn a much lower base rate. For example, Axos ONE pays up to 4.21% APY with its rules met and up to 1.00% without, and SoFi pays 3.30% with direct deposit or $5,000 in deposits every 31 days and 0.80% without. We call the rate with no rules the no strings APY.

Why do banks attach rules to their best rate?

Banks want you to make them your main bank. A paycheck landing in their checking account every month is worth more to them than a savings balance that sits still, so they reward it with a higher savings rate.

Common requirements to watch for

  • Direct deposit. A minimum amount of recurring income, such as a paycheck, deposited each month.
  • Monthly deposits. A minimum total of any deposits in a period, like $5,000 every 31 days.
  • Balance rules. A minimum average daily balance, sometimes in a linked checking account rather than the savings account.
  • A paired checking account. The rule is often on checking, not savings.
  • New account rates. A rate that applies only to new accounts or for a promotional period.

Accounts with no second rate pay the same APY with no monthly rules.

A worked example: is the higher rate worth it?

Using rates we checked on October 2, 2026, here is $10,000 over a year:

ScenarioEstimated interest
Peak Bank at 4.27% APY, no rulesAbout $427
Axos ONE, rules met all 12 months at 4.21% APYAbout $421
Axos ONE, rules missed for 3 of 12 months (1.00% APY in those months)About $341

At these rates, the no strings account wins even if you meet the rules every month: about $6 more a year on $10,000. Miss the rules for three months and the conditional account falls about $86 behind. The gap changes as rates move, but the takeaway holds: a conditional rate only wins if you are confident you will meet the rules every single month.

Estimates are simplified: they apply each month’s rate to a $10,000 balance and ignore compounding within the year.

What about promotional boosts and bonuses?

Some banks add a temporary rate boost or a cash bonus for new customers. SoFi, for example, offers new members an extra 1.10% APY for up to six months under a promotion that runs through December 31, 2027, plus a direct deposit bonus of $50 to $400. These can be worth having, but plan around the standard rate, because the boost ends.

How to compare fairly

  1. Write down both rates: the headline APY and the rate you get without meeting the rules.
  2. Be honest about whether your paycheck will move and stay there.
  3. If not, compare accounts by their no strings rate.
  4. Check where the rule applies. Axos ONE’s balance rule is on its checking account, not savings.

Our comparison page lets you sort by either rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is a no strings APY?

It is the rate a savings account pays without any monthly requirement such as direct deposit, a minimum balance or a set number of deposits. BankingPicks shows it next to every headline rate.

What happens if I miss the direct deposit requirement?

At most banks you earn a lower base rate for that period. At SoFi, savings earns 0.80% APY without direct deposit or $5,000 in qualifying deposits every 31 days, based on rates checked September 28, 2026.

Do all high yield savings accounts require direct deposit?

No. Many pay their full rate with no requirements. Among the accounts we compare, Peak Bank Envision, Western Alliance Bank High Yield Savings Premier, E*TRADE Premium Savings, American Express High Yield Savings and Capital One 360 Performance Savings all do.

Is a savings account with requirements ever the better choice?

Yes, if you will meet the rules every month and value the extras that often come with it, such as a checking account, ATM access or a cash bonus.
