American Express pays its best CD rates on two unusual terms: 4.40% APY on its 10 month and 22 month CDs. Every other term from 11 to 24 months pays 3.65%, its 3 and 4 year CDs pay 2.25% and its 5 year CD pays 3.00%. There is no minimum deposit, but early withdrawal penalties are steep, up to 540 days of interest. Rates accurate as of Oct 18, 2026.
American Express is better known for cards, but its online bank also offers CDs with no minimum deposit and 24/7 support. The catch is that only two terms pay a competitive rate. Here is every term, what the penalties cost and how Amex stacks up.

Which Amex CD term is best?
- 10 months at 4.40%: about $365 on $10,000 over the term, with the lighter 90 day penalty that applies to terms under 12 months.
- 22 months at 4.40%: about $821 on $10,000 over the term, but the penalty jumps to 270 days of interest.
- Skip 3 and 4 years: 2.25% is far below the leaders, and those terms carry 270 to 365 day penalties.

Early withdrawal penalties
| CD term | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Less than 12 months | 90 days of interest |
| 12 months to less than 48 months | 270 days of interest |
| 48 months to less than 60 months | 365 days of interest |
| 60 months | 540 days of interest |
American Express does not allow partial withdrawals: to take money out early you must close the CD. If the penalty is more than the interest you have earned, the difference comes out of your principal. On $10,000 in the 22 month CD, 270 days of interest is roughly $325.

American Express High Yield Savings pays 3.20% APY with no lock up. Its 10 and 22 month CDs pay more if you will not need the money, but the other CD terms pay about the same as savings or less, with a penalty attached. Read our American Express High Yield Savings review.
