Yes. SoFi Bank, N.A. is a real, nationally chartered bank and is FDIC insured under certificate 26881. SoFi became a bank in 2022 when it bought Golden Pacific Bank, and FDIC data shows about $56.8 billion in assets as of June 30, 2026. Deposits are insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category, and up to $3 million through SoFi’s Insured Deposit Program. Savings pays 3.30% APY with direct deposit or $5,000 in monthly deposits, or 0.80% without.
SoFi started as a student loan company, so many people are not sure whether it is a bank or an app that partners with one. It is a bank. Here is the history, how your money is protected and the fine print on its rates.
Is SoFi a real bank?
Yes. On January 18, 2022, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the federal regulator for national banks, conditionally approved SoFi’s plan to form SoFi Bank, National Association. SoFi completed its purchase of Golden Pacific Bancorp and its bank on February 2, 2022, and runs it as SoFi Bank. The bank is based in Cottonwood Heights, Utah.
That makes SoFi different from apps such as Chime, which are technology companies that hold your money at partner banks. At SoFi, the company that runs the app owns the bank. See is Chime a bank? for how the partner bank model works.
Is my money FDIC insured at SoFi?
Yes. SoFi Bank is FDIC insured under certificate 26881, which we confirmed in the FDIC BankFind database. Standard coverage is $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category.
SoFi also offers its Insured Deposit Program, which places deposits above that amount at other FDIC insured program banks, for coverage up to $3 million. If you already bank at one of SoFi’s program banks, money there and money SoFi places there count toward the same limit, so ask SoFi which program banks it uses. See how to insure more than $250,000.
What does SoFi pay?
| Account | APY | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| SoFi Savings | 3.30% (as of Oct 20, 2026) | Eligible direct deposit, or at least $5,000 in qualifying deposits every 31 days |
| SoFi Savings without the above | 0.80% (as of Oct 20, 2026) | Nothing |
| SoFi Checking | 0.50% (as of Oct 20, 2026) | Nothing |
Rates are variable and can change at any time. Each rate shows the date the bank says it applies; we check every figure against the bank’s own website.
For new members, SoFi adds a 1.10% APY boost for up to six months, for up to 4.40% APY. The offer runs through December 31, 2027, and you need to complete the qualifying activity within 60 days of opening (checked Oct 26, 2026). SoFi also pays a direct deposit bonus of $50 for $1,000 to $4,999.99 or $400 for $5,000 or more; see best checking account bonuses.
The rule matters. On $10,000, the top rate earns about $330 a year; without direct deposit or $5,000 in monthly deposits, the same balance earns about $80. If you do not want rules, Pibank Savings pays 4.40% APY with none at our latest check. See savings APY requirements explained.

Our verdict
SoFi is legitimate: a nationally chartered, FDIC insured bank with no account fees and up to $3 million in deposit coverage. It is a strong fit if your paycheck already goes there. If it does not, a no rules account will likely pay more. Compare in SoFi vs. Chime, SoFi vs. Axos or our best high yield savings accounts.
