Which is better for overdrafts?
It depends on how much cushion you need. Neither account charges overdraft fees.
Chime covers overdrafts through SpotMe, up to $200 on debit and credit purchases with no fees once you qualify. Your limit starts lower and can grow over time. If you overdraw, Chime takes the amount back from your next deposit.
Capital One gives you a choice of overdraft settings. You can have transactions declined, cover them with a free transfer from your Capital One savings, or use no fee overdraft coverage. That last option needs regular deposits of at least $250 in two of the previous three months, so a brand new account will not have it right away.
Example: you are $80 short on a car repair two days before payday. With an established SpotMe limit of $100 or more, Chime pays it with no fee. At Capital One, a linked savings account could cover it for free, or no fee coverage could pay it once you have the deposit history.
Which has better access to cash?
Capital One, for most people. It has 70,000+ fee free ATMs across its own, MoneyPass and Allpoint networks, including ATMs in select Target, Walgreens and CVS stores. Chime has 47,000+ fee free ATMs and charges $2.50 out of network, and the ATM owner may add its own fee.
For depositing cash, both work, in different ways. Capital One takes cash at its own ATMs and branches, and you can add cash at participating stores including Walgreens, CVS, Kroger stores and 7 Eleven, up to $999 per deposit, $1,500 a day and $5,000 a month. Chime deposits are free at Walgreens, and other retailers may charge their own fee.
Which pays interest?
Capital One. 360 Checking pays 0.10% APY on every balance. That is small: on a $3,000 balance, it works out to about $3 a year. Chime pays no interest on checking.
Neither is the place to keep savings. Capital One pairs checking with 360 Performance Savings, which pays 3.20% APY (as of Oct 27, 2026). Accounts on our best high yield savings accounts list pay more.
Which has a sign up bonus?
Neither has one we can confirm right now. Capital One offered $250 with promo code CHECKING250 and two direct deposits of $500 or more within 75 days of opening, which we last confirmed on Oct 3, 2026, but as of Oct 13, 2026 it no longer appears on Capital One’s 360 Checking page. You are not eligible if you have or had a 360 Checking, Simply Checking or Total Control Checking account on or after January 1, 2024. Chime does not list a checking sign up bonus. See all the offers we track in best checking account bonuses.
Can you get paid early?
Yes, at both. Each can make your direct deposit available up to 2 days early, depending on when your employer sends the payment. Chime also offers MyPay, which lets you access up to $500 of your pay before payday with qualifying direct deposits. Chime says MyPay has no mandatory fees; faster delivery options may cost extra.
Which has better support?
Chime offers phone support 24/7, and its app is rated 4.8 on the App Store and 4.7 on Google Play (checked Oct 3, 2026). Capital One offers phone support 7 days a week at 877-383-4802, plus in person help at branches and Capital One Cafes. If you want to talk to someone face to face, only Capital One offers that.
Is Chime a real bank?
No. Chime is a financial technology company. Banking services are provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., which are FDIC insured. Your deposits are covered up to $250,000 if certain conditions are met for pass through insurance. Capital One 360 Checking is held directly at Capital One, N.A., an FDIC insured bank.
