What Counts as a Direct Deposit for Bank Bonuses and APY Rules?

Banks usually only count paychecks, pensions and government benefits sent by ACH as direct deposits. Transfers from your own accounts, Zelle and mobile checks usually do not count. Here is how SoFi, Axos and Capital One define it.

For bank bonuses and high yield rules, a direct deposit usually means a recurring paycheck, pension or government benefit (like Social Security) sent electronically through the ACH network by your employer, payroll provider or a government agency. Transfers from your own accounts, Zelle, Venmo or PayPal payments, mobile check deposits and wires usually do not count. Each bank sets its own definition, so read its terms.

Many of the best rates and bonuses we track depend on direct deposit. Axos ONE and SoFi tie their top savings rates to it, and checking bonuses at banks like U.S. Bank require it. If your deposit does not count, you miss the rate or the bonus, so it pays to know the rules.

What usually counts as a direct deposit?

  • Paychecks from your employer or its payroll provider, sent by ACH.
  • Government benefits, such as Social Security or disability payments.
  • Pension payments from a pension or benefits provider.

Banks generally recognize these by how the payer sends them through ACH, the electronic network that moves payroll between banks.

What usually does not count?

  • Transfers from your own account at another bank or brokerage.
  • Person to person payments: Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, Cash App.
  • Mobile check deposits and ATM deposits.
  • Wire transfers.
  • Merchant payouts, such as from Square or Stripe, at some banks.
  • One time deposits, such as a tax refund, at some banks.

How do specific banks define it?

SoFi (APY boost and bonus)Recurring payroll, pension or government benefit deposits by ACH from an employer, payroll or benefits provider or government agencyChecks, Zelle, PayPal, Venmo and Wise transfers, merchant payments from PayPal, Stripe or Square, bank ACH transfers, external wires and IRS tax refunds

What if you do not have a paycheck to move?

Some banks offer a second way to qualify with any deposits, often at a higher amount:

  • Axos ONE Option 2: $5,000 in qualifying deposits a month (outside ACH transfers, incoming wires, mobile checks or ATM deposits) plus a $5,000 average daily balance in checking.
  • SoFi Qualifying Deposits: $5,000 every 31 days from ACH transfers, wires, person to person transfers, checks or cash, for its APY boost.

Or skip the rules entirely. Pibank Savings pays 4.40% APY with no direct deposit at our latest check. See the best savings accounts with no direct deposit.

How to make sure your direct deposit counts

  1. Send it from payroll, not your old bank. Update your deposit details in your employer’s payroll system or with your benefits provider.
  2. Split your paycheck if you want. Many employers let you send part of each check to a second account, so you can send just the amount a bank requires.
  3. Meet the amount and timing. Axos counts deposits that post by the 25th of the month. SoFi looks for one every 31 days.
  4. Check after the first one. SoFi suggests checking your APY details the day after your direct deposit posts, and contacting it if the rate did not update.
  5. Keep it going. Most rate rules are monthly. Stop the deposit and the rate drops.

Is chasing a direct deposit rule worth it?

It depends on the dollars. A higher savings rate is worth more on bigger balances; on $5,000, a 0.50% higher APY is about $25 a year. Bonuses are often worth more: see the best checking account bonuses. For rate rules, compare the top rate you would earn with the best no rules rate, and ask if the difference is worth the effort. For example, see Axos ONE vs. Peak Bank.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Zelle transfer count as a direct deposit?

Usually not. SoFi and Axos both exclude person to person payments like Zelle, Venmo and PayPal.

Does a transfer from my other bank count as direct deposit?

Usually not. SoFi excludes bank ACH transfers and Axos excludes online banking transfers. Some banks count them toward a separate deposit option.

Does Social Security count as a direct deposit?

At SoFi and Axos, yes. Both list government benefits such as Social Security.

How do banks know a deposit is a direct deposit?

They look at how the payer sends it through the ACH network. SoFi notes that a small number of payers do not mark payments as direct deposit.

Can I split my paycheck to meet a direct deposit rule?

Often yes. Many employers let you send part of each paycheck to a second account.
