Most transfers to or from a high yield savings account take 1 to 3 business days, because they move by ACH between banks. Some online banks also hold new deposits for up to five business days before you can withdraw them. Transfers between two accounts at the same bank are often much faster, and wires usually arrive the same day, often for a fee.

Online savings accounts pay more because they run lean, and part of that is moving money by bank transfer instead of cash or checks. Knowing the timing helps you avoid being short when a bill is due.

How long does an ACH transfer take?

Usually 1 to 3 business days. ACH is the network banks use for transfers and direct deposits. Nacha, which runs the ACH network, says about 80% of ACH payments settle in one banking day or less, and ACH credits can settle the same day, the next banking day or in two banking days. Your bank’s cutoff time, weekends and holidays can add a day.

Why does my bank hold the money?

When you pull money in from another bank, the receiving bank may hold it for a few days to make sure the transfer does not bounce back. For example:

BankWhat it says
Peak Bank EnvisionOpening funds and incoming external transfers are held for five business days
American ExpressTransfers usually take 1 to 2 business days; money pulled in from a linked bank is available by the fifth business day
Western AllianceWithdrawals can take up to five business days; $250,000 per transfer
Marcus Online SavingsTransfers of $100,000 or less made by 12pm ET are processed the same business day

Push or pull: does it matter?

Often, yes. A push is when you start the transfer from the bank sending the money. A pull is when you start it from the bank receiving it. Holds often apply to pulls, because the receiving bank is taking money from somewhere else. If one of your banks is faster, start the transfer there.

How to move money faster

  • Keep checking and savings at one bank. Transfers between accounts at the same bank usually move faster than transfers between banks, often right away.
  • Start before the cutoff. Transfers made after a bank’s daily cutoff, or on a weekend, start the next business day.
  • Use a wire for large, urgent moves. Wires usually arrive the same day, but they often cost money; Capital One charges $30 for an outgoing domestic wire, and some savings accounts, like Western Alliance’s, do not offer wires.
  • Plan for the first transfer. New accounts and new linked accounts often have the longest holds.
  • Keep a small buffer in checking so a slow transfer never causes an overdraft.

Is a slow transfer a reason to skip a high yield account?

Usually not. For an emergency fund, a 1 to 3 day wait is fine for most costs, and a credit card can bridge a gap. If you need same day access, choose an account with a linked checking account at the same bank, such as Capital One 360 or Axos ONE. See the best savings accounts for an emergency fund.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to transfer money to a high yield savings account?

Usually 1 to 3 business days by ACH. Some banks hold new deposits for up to five business days before you can withdraw them.

Why is my savings transfer taking five days?

The receiving bank may be holding money pulled in from another bank until it is sure the transfer will not be returned. Peak Bank and American Express both describe five business day holds on some incoming money.

Can I transfer money from a high yield savings account the same day?

Sometimes. Marcus processes transfers of $100,000 or less made by 12pm ET the same business day, and transfers within one bank are often faster. A wire is usually same day but often costs a fee.

Do transfers happen on weekends?

ACH transfers generally process on business days, so a transfer started Friday evening may not move until Monday.

Is it faster to push or pull money between banks?

Starting the transfer from the bank that is sending the money (a push) often avoids holds that apply when the receiving bank pulls it.
