How we chose

A checking account is where you spend, so our scorecard puts fees and access to cash first. Interest counts for less. APY scores use a 1.00% benchmark, since few checking accounts pay much. For apps that are not banks, we name and verify the FDIC insured partner bank that holds your money.

How to choose a checking account

1. Avoid monthly fees you will not waive

Many online checking accounts have no monthly fee at all. If an account charges one, check whether you will really meet the rule to waive it, such as direct deposit or a minimum balance.

2. Check ATM access and cash deposits

Look at the size of the fee free ATM network, whether out of network ATM fees are refunded and how you can deposit cash. Online banks handle cash very differently from branch banks.

3. Read the overdraft rules

Some accounts charge nothing for overdrafts or decline purchases instead. Others charge a fee per item. Know which one you are signing up for.

4. Look at the app

You will use a checking account every week, so app quality and support hours matter more than they do for a savings account.

5. Treat bonuses as a bonus

Sign up bonuses can be worth a few hundred dollars, but they come with deposit rules and deadlines. Pick an account you would keep without the bonus.

Remember: fees, bonuses and rates can change. The figures on this page were checked on Oct 26, 2026. Always confirm current terms on the bank’s website before you open an account.

Frequently asked questions

What should I look for in a checking account?

Look for no monthly fee (or one that is easy to waive), a large fee free ATM network, fair overdraft rules and a mobile app you will actually use.

Is a checking account FDIC insured?

Checking accounts at FDIC insured banks are covered up to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category.

Are apps like Chime banks?

No. Some popular checking apps are financial technology companies that hold your money at partner banks. Your deposits can be FDIC insured through those banks, but coverage only protects you if the partner bank fails. We name the partner bank for every app we review.

Can a checking account pay interest?

Some do, though usually far less than a high yield savings account. If you keep a large balance, consider moving extra cash to savings.

How often does BankingPicks update this page?

We recheck fees, rates and bonuses at least weekly against each bank’s own website, and each review shows the date we last checked it.
